Have you had your blades sharpened recently? You should have your blades sharpened every couple of months, depending on how much you skate. If you run your fingers carefully across your blades and you feel a lot of bumps or “knicks,” or they feel like dull knives, it’s time to have them sharpened! The Hockey Monkey Pro Shop can help you with all of your boot and blade maintenance needs.
If you need more information about private lessons, please feel free to contact me at fbeck@icetown.com.

Defensive Positioning: Hinging
When controlling the puck around mid-ice or near your own blue-line, the defenseman WITHOUT the puck can help the other D-man by providing a pass option.
While most defensemen will remain open directly in-line with the puck-carrying defenseman across the ice, you can provide additional defensive zone support by dropping back BEHIND the (imaginary) line of your defense partner.
This is known as hinging.
Imagine a door or a gate opening up using the player with the puck as the hinge. Hinging acts as a safety valve for a drop-back pass when the fore-check becomes too heavy.
It’s always exciting to see new teams at the top of their divisions. With the switch to two, 20 game seasons, as opposed to the three season years we used to play with, more teams are given a chance to improve their records for better playoff positioning and matchups. Obviously this can also work against a team that is slipping during the season as well.
There is a new rule that has been adopted by CAHA and USA Hockey that is going to take effect next season. It is important for everyone to be prepared for this rule as this can change the dynamic of the game:
CAHA has altered the application of the head contact rule. For the 2012-2013 season, Head Contact will be penalized with a minimum of minor and a misconduct. A minor and a misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who contacts an opponent in the head, face or neck, including with the stick or any part of the player’s body or equipment. (For example, a high stick that makes contact to an opponent’s head or neck shall be penalized as head contact).
A major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who targets or injures an opponent as a result of head contact or who intentionally or recklessly contacts an opponent in the head, face of neck. (For example, a player throws a single punch to an opponent’s head/neck will be assessed a major and game misconduct for head contact).
We have openings in every division so if you are interested in playing please contact the Hockey Director at (949) 683-8677 or email Matt Dunaev at mdunaev@icetown.com for more information on joining our Adult hockey league.
The adult hockey clinic is perfect for adults looking to better their skills and pick their game up.
