I’m sure we’ve all heard the term “practice makes perfect,” but in the sport of figure skating, practice is extremely important. As skaters learn more skills, it is imperative to practice the skills that have been already acquired, as well as the new skills. A strong foundation of the most basic elements will determine the rate of improvement and more difficult maneuvers will be easier to achieve if you have been practicing the fundamentals on a regular basis. So, come to public session and freestyle and practice as much as possible!

A lot of guys complain about their sore back. It's important to know your body's limitations, and it's important to be aware of your body position at all times. Learn to recognize those situations where your back is most a risk: bending, lifting, reaching, twisting, etc.
According to the experts, there are a couple basic things you can do to help prevent back injuries in hockey;
Strengthen the Abdominals
The abdominal muscles are crucial to holding the core (back and stomach) together. People often wonder why the abdominals, when it is my back that is hurting. Usually the lower abdominals (below the waist line) will be quite weak on most people, and therefore not be able to hold the pelvis stable the way it should.
NO Twisting
Whenever you twist always keep your feet moving and never let your trunk twist beyond where your feet are pointing. If you are going around a player or behind the net, try to keep your waist pointing in the same direction as you feet are pointing.
Stretch first – Although there are no studies that show stretching before an activity can prevent the injuries, it has been thought that warm muscles will work more efficiently and therefore decrease their chance of straining.
New Head Contact Rule
As if it is not confusing enough that the head contact rule was implemented half way through our season, there has been another change to this rule, but at least now it is for the better.
The original rule states that for the 2012-2013 season, Head Contact will be penalized with a minimum of minor and a misconduct. A minor and a misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who contacts an opponent in the head, face or neck, including with the stick or any part of the player’s body or equipment. (For example, a high stick that makes contact to an opponent’s head or neck shall be penalized as head contact).
A major plus a game misconduct penalty shall be assessed to any player who targets or injures an opponent as a result of head contact or who intentionally or recklessly contacts an opponent in the head, face of neck. (For example, a player throws a single punch to an opponent’s head/neck will be assessed a major and game misconduct for head contact).
The alteration to this rule is that if there is incidental contact to an opponent’s head with a stick, that is non-intentional, the penalty reverts back to what it was originally which is a minor high-sticking penalty.
Schedule and Playoff Eligibility
We are in the final month of the regular season which means that players need to get their games in for playoff eligibility. Remember that fully paid players, including those on the payment plan, are playoff eligible regardless of games played. Those that are paying the drop in price are required to have 12 games played (preseason included) to be eligible. If you have questions relating to your eligibility, contact Matt Dunaev at mdunaev@icetown.com.
More Ice Time
If you have the itch to get more ice time above and beyond the adult league, don’t forget about the weekly adult clinic, puck play and pick up hockey. These are great opportunities to work on skill development and get some more time on the ice.

We are excited at how this in house season is shaping up. With six teams in the 10U division and inter-rink play with Aliso Viejo Ice Palace, we are anticipating great hockey and lots of success this season. The goal with the inter-rink play is to give our teams the opportunity to compete against other local youth hockey programs and give more variety to the teams in our league. This is a spectacular chance to get the feel of travel hockey without over committing to true travel hockey.

We are also proud to announce that our in house players have the chance to play a game at the Citizens Business Bank Arena
8U/10U will play on Saturday, December 1st @ 2:00pm
14U/17U will play on Saturday, December 8th @ 2:00pm.
Each player will be required to purchase a minimum of 10 tickets to that night's Ontario Reign game in order to play at the arena. These tickets will give entry to the arena for the In House game as well as the Ontario Reign game that night. All tickets are to be purchased at the ICETOWN box office for $12 each. The deadline to purchase tickets is November 23.

The Hockey Academy is developing players as it has always and is encouraging players to continue to grow through the system. Although the coaches are watching to see which players are ready to move to in house, don’t hesitate to ask a coach if your superstar feels like they are ready to pushed to the next level.

The Jr Reign and Lady Reign hockey club is moving in the right direction with teams being placed in their appropriate divisions. Our Squirt BB team has been playing great and Midget 18AA has also had a good showing in their first CAHA weekend. We are also very pleased with the success that our girls are having with being much more competitive than in years past and showing that hard work and persistence really pays off.
Congratulations to the Girls 10U team on their recent 5-2 victory of the Lady Kings!!

The Squirt B team had a few birthday’s last month that they celebrated at the rink and the entire team, including parents and coaches, got in on the festivities.
Our Military Kids
Sled Hockey
Thanks to the hard work of Todd and Christie Jenkins (founders of the sled program in southern California) and Andrew Hodge (Head Coach), the Jr Reign Sled Hockey team has been accepted as a Paralympic Sports Club. This allows our players and coaches to take part in Paralympic events and we are proud and excited to be part of the organization.
We are also excited about the great forward momentum that our Sled Hockey program is having. We have a wide age range of talented sled hockey players that are working hard to raise awareness of the sport as well as becoming great hockey players.
