Tip of the Month

Do you warm up before you skate?  It is important that your muscles are warm and flexible before you get on the ice and move in the ways skating requires the body to move.  Stretching, jumping rope, and jogging, are simple ways of getting your body warm and muscles ready to perform before stepping on the ice.  Remember, the ice rink is cold, so if your body is cold prior to getting on the ice, it will only be colder after being in the rink, which is dangerous and can put you at risk for injury.

Tony Cortez at Power Ice Sports Performance, located inside of Icetown, can help you design an off ice warm up routine that is quick, yet easy to complete prior to skating.

Make sure you stop into Hockey Monkey Pro Shop, located inside ICETOWN to check out the consignment apparel and skates for sale at great prices!

Adult Hockey:

Now that the season is coming to a close, the post season starts next week.  With a new format to the playoff schedule, the finals is going to be exciting for every team with the best of three game series for the championship.  Remember that players are to have 12 games played unless they are fully paid to be playoff eligible.

With the close of the current season this month, our new adult season is starting on July 8.  We have openings in every division so if you are interested in playing please contact our Hockey Director at (949) 683-8677 or email Matt Dunaev at mdunaev@icetown.com for more information on joining our Adult hockey league.

Adult Hockey Clinic:

The adult hockey clinic is perfect for adults looking to better their skills and pick their game up.

In-House:

The spring in house season is also coming to a close on June 23.  Please make sure to check the updated schedule for the championship games online.

This season has been the best spring season Icetown has ever seen.  Many players have taken advantage of the hybrid program with spring clinics and we have seen immense improvement in the players.  The stats are close and playoff are around the corner so be sure to be at top performance for the games the rest of the season.

HOCKEY ACADEMY:

The Hockey Academy is developing players as it has always and is encouraging players to continue to grow through the system.  Although the coaches are watching to see which players are ready to move to in house, don’t hesitate to ask a coach if your superstar feels like they are ready to pushed to the next level.

Hockey Tip:

Get Full Power from Your Wrist Shot

The wrist shot is the most commonly used shot in hockey, but you would be surprised how many players, young and old, are not harnessing all of their power and putting it into their wrist shot.

Pull the puck back

    • When taking a wrist shot, think of it like a sling shot. The further you can comfortably pull the puck back, the more time the puck spends on the blade of your stick, and the more time you have to transfer energy, and put power into your shot.
  • Start with the puck near the heel
    • When you set the puck up on the blade of your stick it should be near the heel of your stick. The location varies depending on the shot, but no further than the middle of the blade. The puck will roll off of the blade of your stick, so starting with the puck close to the heel allows it to stay on the blade of your stick longer, and add more power to the shot.
  • Flex the stick
    • A lot of the power actually comes from the shaft of your stick. When you lean into the shot, you’re storing energy in the shaft of your stick (potential energy). When the shot is released, so is the energy, and a lot of that energy will be transferred into the shot, making your shot a lot more powerful.
  • Weight Transfer
    • This goes hand in hand with flexing the stick. The more you lean into your shot, the more you are transferring weight, and the more power you will get from your shot. If you watch NHL players you will notice a lot of them lift their back leg when they shoot, this is because they are moving all of their weight into the direction of the shot.
  • Use Your Legs
    • Your legs have the most powerful muscles in your body, if you do not use your legs when you shoot, you are missing out on a lot of energy that you could be putting into your shot! It may sound strange (a lot of players think that your wrist shot is all arms) but try it out, use your legs to push into the shot, you may be surprised. Also don't forget to rotate your shoulder and hips when you are shooting, this helps you put even more power into your shot.
  • Follow Through
    • This is something most people learn as a youngster but I thought it was worth repeating. Don't stop pushing, push right through and continue into your follow through. In order to get full power from your wrist shot, you have to continue increasing the speed of your stick; this keeps the puck on the blade of your stick longer. Remember to point your stick where you want the puck to go.
