SUMMER HOCKEY & FIGURE SKATING CAMP!

The end of the 2012 Hockey & Figure Skating Camp is here. What an amazing summer this has been. Our staff has had a great time teaching all of the children, and we hope to see each and every one of them throughout the year in our many programs, and, of course, next summer back at camp. However the camp experience doesn’t have to wait till next summer we offer a Winter & Spring Camp . We also offer youth programs so we would love to see all the campers smiling faces throughout the year. Please contact us at 951-637-3070 to find out more about our Hockey & Figure Skating Academy programs. We want to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Summer camp special and exciting.

THANK YOU!!

NEWS

Bring a Friend Week:

Bring a friend the week of August 21-25, 2012 to skating academy for free!!

Your friend can attend skating academy with you for a free half hour skating lesson, with free skate rental on the day of your skating academy class free of charge!  You can choose to stay with your friend in the beginning class and help them learn the basics, or attend your regular class.  Make sure to pick up your “Bring a Friend Pass” from our instructors this month during academy classes.

Be A Star Coming in September:

Icetown’s Be A Star Competitions will be returning starting in September.  For those of you not familiar with this program, it is an in house competition, in which our skaters get a chance to feel what it is like to compete and perform in front of a crowd.  Your first step to participate in this event should be to sign up with a private instructor, who will help you in creating a program and choosing music.  Look for more information during skating academy classes and feel free to ask the instructors questions!

ICETOWN IS THE COOLEST PLACE TO BE THIS SUMMER! Summer time is the best time to spend on the ice and avoid the summer heat! Take advantage of your free access to public session and practice!

Make-Up Classes: August Make-Up Week: Make-Up Lessons for the lessons you missed in August can be completed during the week of September 11-15, 2012.

Hockey Tip:

Goaltending

The Ready Position

Stand in the crease with your knees bent. This will be the stance you will stay in for the majority of the game. Keeping the knees bent aids in faster reactions to shots on goal. Keep both hands held out in front of you at equal height. The catching glove should remain open (until there is a catch), and the blocker should be held out in front of the knees. Keep your stick on the ice at all times. Put the stick at a slight angle and make sure that it is held away from the toes of your skates. The stick should always touch the ice and never touch the toes of your skates. Stay balanced, keeping your weight on the balls of your feet. The head stays up, and the arms and legs move independently of each other. Practice your ready position until you feel comfortable and ready for anything.

The Butterfly Save

Drop to your knees by putting your feet out sideways. Try to be covering as much net as possible.
Keep the stick on the ice! The stick should be on the ice and covering the small space between the legs (known as the five-hole). Put your open catching glove out in front of you, keeping it low and close to the legs. Work on maneuvering your body from side to side while on your knees. It is equally important to learn how to quickly return to an upright position from the butterfly position.Learn the art of effective goalie/team communication. Know the essential signals (such as raising the glove hand to signal icing calls) and phrases to let your men know what's going on around you. Develop a strong sense of hand-eye coordination and keen ability to keep track of the puck. These are essential elements for a good glove save. Work on your stick handling. You should be able to effectively maneuver the puck if it comes your way, and you should be able to do it without removing your bulky gloves. Among other things, you should develop the ability to pull off one-handed passes with ease.

All of this information is simply a drop in the bucket in the world of goal tending. The best learning method is to listen to your coach and do your drills.

Adult Hockey:

Our new season is now well underway and the addition of the 7th division (Platinum) is creating more parity amongst the teams in other divisions.  With many teams purchasing new jerseys and everyone having matching jerseys, the league is looking much better as well.  Remember that any player that does not have a matching jersey with number will have to serve a 10 minute misconduct penalty.

With the close of the current season, our new adult season is starting on July 8.  We have openings in every division so if you are interested in playing please contact the Hockey Director at (949) 683-8677 or email Matt Dunaev at mdunaev@icetown.com for more information on joining our Adult hockey league.

HOCKEY ACADEMY

The Hockey Academy is developing players as it has always and is encouraging players to continue to grow through the system.  Although the coaches are watching to see which players are ready to move to in house, don’t hesitate to ask a coach if your superstar feels like they are ready to pushed to the next level.

For more information please contact Kyle Cook at kcook@icetown.com.
